LAMENT”

"Lament" - by Mara Katria x Modern English

MESSAGE ON BANDCAMP

Been thinking a lot this week, this year. Thinking about make believe and authenticity. Looking at the four walls of any room and wondering: what even is a wall, a room, a house? There, above it all is a sky, and so much more beyond. And in comprehending the expanse, the so called ‘room’ and ‘walls’ fade into absurdity. Some of the rules are merely ephemeral agreements like the accord we collectively grant to the value of a dollar –– or a rupee in the Legend of Zelda video games. Oh these foolish games. Do you ever look at yourself in the mirror and catch yourself looking back *knowingly* –– from behind the eyes? Has someone ever looked at you and really ‘seen’ you? Or have you ‘seen’ them? Breathing in and out –– through the veil betwixt Truth and a temporally vapid rubric.

This week, the song is “Lament” — song VI, as it turns out, on February VI. Synchronicities perhaps. Perhaps not. Unplanned either way. And there is something real and true about existence. We *are* here. And whatever that means, it is True.

Here follows a brief excerpt from my companion memoir for Modern M (also coming March 13th) –– Chapter VI . . .

🌹 LAMENT 🌹
Face Me

This is the true story of how the song “Lament” found me.

In the deep of night, a younger version of myself looked out my bedroom window. Rose red streetlights glimmered on the black waters of the lake. The midnight-green grasses sighed in the breeze: I am alive. I heard a symphony. It came from within and beyond. The music lifted me in the air and told me a sad but achingly beautiful tale.

I heard the story whispered when I walked down to the waters at daybreak. I sang loud the music that moved through me. I imagined the world was much bigger, that I was alone with the fish of the lake –– singing my song. But there were eyes and ears always; the ‘empty silhouettes’ found me.
